Part 1: Welcome & Why Optimise

This roadmap helps you DRIVE your business to success while we NAVIGATE your journey. Yes, you DRIVE while we NAVIGATE you to success.

In this detailed step-by-step guide, we will explore the top tips for plumbers to optimise their Google Business Profile effectively.

Watch the introductory video here: https://youtu.be/Lr2NLHexq9I

Why Should a Plumber Optimise their Google Business Profile?

In today's digital landscape, local plumbers must use online tools to boost visibility and attract more clients. Today, Google remains the most popular place in the world where customers go to ask questions. As a result, one of the most effective free resources for answering those questions is the Google Business Profile (GBP). By optimising your GBP, you can significantly boost your online presence, build trust with potential customers, and ultimately grow your plumbing business.

Benefits of Optimising Your Google Business Profile

Credibility

You can offer prospective clients a link to your GBP, where they can find reviews and photos. This elevates your business and helps it be seen as a formal, professional business you can trust.

Enhanced Local Visibility

An optimised GBP ensures your business appears prominently in local search results and on Google Maps, making it easier for potential clients in your area to find and contact you.

Improved Search Rankings

Regularly updating your GBP with accurate information and engaging content can improve your local SEO, leading to higher rankings in search results.

Customer Reviews and Ratings

Encouraging satisfied clients to leave positive reviews enhances your reputation and builds trust with prospective customers. Eighty-five per cent of people trust online reviews just as much as word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and family.

More Benefits of Optimising Your Google Business Profile

Showcase Services with Photos

Uploading high-quality photos of your team and completed projects allows potential clients to see the quality of your work, making your services more appealing.

Direct Customer Engagement

Features like messaging and Q&A enable direct communication with potential clients, allowing you to answer inquiries promptly and build relationships.

Insights and Analytics

GBP provides valuable data on how customers interact with your profile, including search queries and actions taken, helping you refine your marketing strategies.

Promote Offers and Updates

Utilise Google Posts to share promotions, special offers, or updates about your services, keeping your audience informed and engaged.

Even More Benefits of Optimising Your Google Business Profile

Accurate Business Information

Keeping contact details, operating hours, and service areas up to date ensures customers have the right information, reducing confusion and missed opportunities. Some 50% of consumers look for directions before heading to businesses they do not visit regularly. If you don't show up on Google Maps, they may go to another listed supplier simply because it is easier.

Mobile Accessibility

With over 50% of users searching for local services on mobile devices (and 75% of those doing so on Google), an optimised GBP ensures your business is easy for on-the-go customers to find.

Competitive Advantage

A well-maintained GBP sets you apart from competitors who may not be leveraging this tool effectively, positioning your business as more professional and trustworthy. Think of an unverified profile as a lost, affordable advertising opportunity.

Part 2: Claim, Verify, and Delegate

Before optimising your GBP listing, you need to claim and verify it. If you find a GBP that already exists for your business but haven't claimed it, search for your business name on Google Maps or Google Search.

Steps to Claim, Verify, and Delegate

01

Click "Claim this business" or "Own this business?"

02

Sign in to your Google account (use the Gmail account you want to manage your business with).

03

Follow the steps to verify your ownership. Google will send you a verification code via SMS, email, post, or ask for a short video verification of your tools and vehicle.

04

Once verified, go to business.google.com and sign in to access the full range of features and review what you find to get familiar with what they want.

05

Appoint Webo as your Profile Manager: To ensure your profile stays technically optimised, you can delegate management. Appoint YeboWebo@gmail.com as your Profile Manager. (See instructions here: https://www.webo.directory/DIYacademy/websitewebpage.php?catID=1489)

06

Next, review the checklist in Part 3 below to get an idea of what lies ahead. You will return to add missing details to your profile or add new content, such as updates, etc.

07

Note: We will repeat this below, but you must start, in Part 3 below, by adding what you can; then you will return after the next phase to update your GBP after we have shown you how to get your AI Assistant to create links to your GET FOUND & GET GROWING (Ghost) Microsite.

Part 3: The GBP Optimisation Checklist (Step-by-Step)

Use your GBP to connect with local clients by answering the questions prospective clients may ask. Don't assume anything is obvious; for example, if you don't list a specific service area and support it with images and mentions in reviews, Google will not rank you for searches in that area.

A complete profile provides valuable information to potential clients and signals to Google that your business is active and trustworthy. Review this checklist before filling in the relevant details.

1. Business Name & The Golden Formula

Your name needs to be clear, but it also must comply with Google's strict rules.

The Golden Formula: [Location] + [Plumbing Keyword] + [Trust/Speed Word]

Hyperlocal Appeal

Randburg Rapid Response Plumbers, Fourways Family Plumbing.

Location + Service

Sandton Leak Repair Experts, Gauteng Drain Masters.

Service + Trust

Trusted Tap & Drain Services, Local Leak Fixers.

Speed & Reliability

24/7 QuickFix Plumbing Randparkrif.

2. Categories & Sub-Categories

Primary Category

Set this strictly to Plumber. This primary tag carries 80% of your local search ranking weight.

Secondary Categories

You can have up to 10, but only list relevant ones to avoid diluting your ranking. Add specific trades such as Drainage Service, Emergency Plumbing Service, and Geyser Installation & Repair. (Tip: Change these if your services are seasonal).

Competitor Research: Have you considered offering the maximum number of relevant sub-categories? Offer sub-categories that detail services beyond plumbing or that relate to the plumbing services you provide. Study your Webo Status Quo report for details on what your competitors list as their categories and sub-categories. If you want to see a wider range of what plumbers list, use the free Chrome Extension called GMB Everywhere to review what categories your top competitors are using.

Illustrative Examples: Sub-Categories

When optimising a Google Business Profile (GBP) for yourself as a plumber with a primary category listed as a Plumber, selecting the right secondary categories is critical for capturing long-tail search intent.

Google's algorithm uses these sub-categories to determine whether a business is a good match for specific queries (like "blocked drain near me" or "geyser repair").

Here are some popular and highly relevant sub-categories available in the GBP ecosystem that may be an excellent fit for a plumbing business:

1. Core Plumbing & Drainage (Highly Recommended)

If you handle general repairs, blockages, and installations, these could be your most direct matches:

Drainage service (Crucial for capturing "blocked drain," "rooter," and "drain cleaning" searches)

Gasfitter / Gas installation service (Many plumbers are licensed to handle gas lines, gas stoves, and gas water heaters)

Hot water system supplier (Excellent for capturing searches related to water heater/geyser repairs and installations)

Septic system service (Essential if they serve suburban or rural areas and handle septic tank pumping or repairs)

2. Renovations & Installations

Plumbers are often the primary contractors or key tradesmen on wet-room remodelling projects. If this is applicable and you actually do installation work (not just the plumbing), include:

Bathroom remodeler

Kitchen remodeler

3. HVAC & Heating (If you have a dual-trade business)

Many plumbing businesses operate as "Plumbing & Heating" or "Plumbing & HVAC" companies. If you hold the necessary licenses, these categories have massive search volume:

Heating contractor

Often tied to boiler repairs, radiant floor heating, and radiators

HVAC contractor

Air conditioning contractor

4. Specialised Niche Services

Depending on the specific services you offer, these can help you dominate niche local searches with lower competition:

Water softening equipment supplier (Great for hard-water areas where you install filtration/softener systems)

Water damage restoration service (If you offer 24/7 emergency burst-pipe mitigation and cleanup)

Lawn sprinkler system contractor (If you handle outdoor irrigation plumbing)

Well drilling contractor (If you service well pumps for off-grid or rural properties)

If you install water tanks, Google's category options are a bit specific. The closest and most accurate sub-category available in the Google Business Profile ecosystem is: Rainwater tank supplier

Strategic Nuance: Rainwater Tank Supplier Category

Here is the strategic nuance for using this category, especially for a plumber operating in South Africa where municipal backup water tanks (like JoJo tanks) are in massive demand:

The Google Quirk

Even if you are installing tanks primarily for municipal backup water rather than rainwater harvesting, Rainwater tank supplier is still the exact category you must select to signal to Google that you supply and install water storage tanks.

Complementary Pump Category

Tank installations almost always require a booster pump to feed the water back into the property's plumbing. You should absolutely also add Water pump supplier as another secondary category.

Maintenance

If you also offer maintenance for these systems, you can add Water tank cleaning service.

How to Optimise for "Backup Water" and "JoJo Tanks"

Since the GBP category specifically says "Rainwater," you need to bridge the gap for customers searching for general water storage or backup systems. You do this using the Services tab and your Description:

1. Add Custom Services

Under your "Plumber" and "Rainwater tank supplier" sub-category in the GBP dashboard, manually add custom services such as:

  • Backup Water Tank Installation
  • JoJo Tank Installation
  • Water Storage Solutions
  • Water Pump Installation & Repairs
  • Rainwater Harvesting Systems

2. Update the Description

Adjust the value proposition you created earlier to include this highly sought-after service. For example:

"We help homeowners achieve fast, permanent solutions to leaks, blockages, and backup water storage so they can enjoy peace of mind in a fully functional home without the stress of water outages or hidden costs."

GBP Optimisation Strategy Tips

Next Step: Once you select your relevant sub-categories, explicitly list the related services (e.g., "Drain Cleaning," "Geyser Installation") under the Services tab in the GBP.

3. Description & Keywords

750-Character Description: State your core service, key suburbs covered, emergency availability, and prompt response times within the first two sentences. Write a clear, keyword-rich description (e.g., include phrases like "Sandton Plumber" or "Emergency plumbing services").

Rules: No visible links are allowed in this text box, and no deals or discounts are allowed in the description.

The Description Template

The following template will assist you in articulating what it is that you do:

We help ___________________________________

achieve/do ___________________________________

so they can ___________________________________

without ___________________________________

Description Option 1: Focus on Reliability and Trust

Ideal for residential homeowners

We help homeowners and property managers achieve fast, permanent solutions to leaks, blockages, and installations so they can enjoy peace of mind in a safe, fully functional home without the stress of hidden costs, messy clean-ups, or waiting around for late technicians.

Description Option 2: Focus on Emergency Services

Ideal for 24/7 rapid response

We help local families and businesses get immediate relief from sudden plumbing disasters and burst pipes so they can return to their day-to-day routines without costly water damage or exorbitant after-hours call-out fees.

Description Option 3: Focus on Commercial & Maintenance

Ideal for B2B plumbing

We help commercial facilities and retail spaces achieve seamless, proactive plumbing maintenance and rapid fault repairs so they can keep operations running smoothly for their customers without costly operational downtime or disruptive work environments.

How to Integrate This Into a Complete GBP Description

To maximise visibility and conversion in a Google Business Profile optimisation strategy, this value proposition works best as the opening "hook," followed by core service clusters and a strong call to action.

Example of the full GBP Description (under the 750-character limit):

"We help homeowners achieve fast, permanent solutions to leaks, blockages, and installations so they can enjoy peace of mind without the stress of hidden costs or messy clean-ups.

As a fully licensed and insured plumbing service, we pride ourselves on getting the job done right the first time. Whether you are dealing with an unexpected midnight emergency or planning a bathroom renovation, our expert technicians bring decades of experience to your doorstep.

Our core services include: • Emergency leak and burst pipe repair • Drain clearing and root removal • Geyser/Water heater installations and repairs • Toilet, tap, and fixture upgrades.

Call us today for a free, no-obligation quote and transparent pricing!"

4. Location Consistency (NAP) & Service Areas

NAP (Name, Address, Phone)

Keep these details exactly the same across all online directories (Yelp, Yellow Pages, Webo, etc.). If they don't match perfectly, Google gets confused and lowers your ranking. Do not change all your contact details simultaneously.

Physical Address vs. No Address

Use a real physical address (no PO Boxes or Virtual Offices). However, if you are a mobile service (tradesman/artisan) operating without a commercial shopfront for customers to visit, select No for having a physical location customers can visit. This hides your home address and prevents random foot traffic. Plus, it shifts the focus from where you live to the areas you serve.

Map Pin Check

Check the map to see where Google thinks your business is. If your pin is in Randburg but you want to be found in Sandton, you cannot change your position without physically moving your address.

Service Areas

Add up to 20 specific suburbs, towns, or postal codes within a 2-hour drive of your base where you accept call-outs (e.g., Fourways, Bryanston, Sandton, Randburg).

5. Hours of Operation & Years in Business

Exact Hours

Set exact operating hours. If you offer emergency leak or burst-pipe call-outs, toggle the 24 hours option. When browsers ask for a plumber after business hours, Google gives preference to those listed as offering 24/7 services.

Dynamic Hours

Update your holiday hours accurately. Note: If you are listed as closed, you will not rank well for your closed hours. For some service businesses, these may be the hours you answer the phone versus the hours you operate in the field, so in these cases, list the hours that you answer the phone as your hours. This way, a potential customer may still book you if they are happy to wait until you're next available.

Years in Business

Edit your Google Profile to enter your start date to show your experience.

6. Contact Details & WhatsApp Messaging

Phone Number: Use a dedicated mobile number.

WhatsApp Setup: Google no longer automatically shows a WhatsApp number on free profiles unless you pay for sponsored ads. Here is how to use WhatsApp effectively:

01

Go to Messages (Chat) in your GBP Manager and turn it on. This allows customers to use Google's native chat button to reach you.

02

To get WhatsApp messages directly, add your WhatsApp link to your "Appointment/Booking Link" field on your profile, or use it in the buttons on your Posts.

03

Format: https://wa.me/27821234567 (Use your country code, leave out the +, and leave out the first 0 of your mobile number).

7. Website Links & Webo Microsites

Add Your Website: Paste the URL of your website to provide immediate proof of work and pricing.

Webo GET FOUND & GET GROWING (Ghost) Microsites: In the next phase of your journey, Webo gives you single-page, small website pages restricted to 2MB each (called "microsites").

Why they work: These connect to your GBP and send signals from Google AI to Google Search, adding to your ranking in terms of Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust (E-E-A-T). They link to your services, photos, and reviews, and are designed specifically for search engine indexing robots, not just humans. Google likes this because it proves your business is real.

No Coding Required: You don't need to know coding. Webo's AI assistant sets it up for you, including advanced hidden coding messages called Schema markup. For example, the AI writes code saying: "This is a local business called [Your Name] located at [Your Address] open [These Hours]". You do not need to worry about this—the AI Prompts that Webo has created will do it all for you automatically.

8. Services & Products

Complete Services

Add Google's predefined services AND add custom services. Itemise specific tasks with starting prices (e.g., Geyser Replacement, Unblocking Drains, Leak Detection, Tap & Toilet Repairs) to set expectations.

Dedicated Landing Pages

Link these services to specific pages, like a blog topic, where the services are linked to keywords.

Products

You can upload products, service packages, or menu items using the product editor. Each product listing has a dedicated field for a "More details" or "Learn more" link. Link these to a Webo Microsite, Webo Product Page, or blog page. Google regularly checks links for compliance, so do not use link shorteners.

9. Photos & Videos

Photos boost engagement by 40% to 50%, especially if they are genuine. Avoid stock photos completely.

Technical Rules: Images must be a minimum of 720 x 720 pixels, between 10KB and 5MB in size, and in JPG or PNG format. (Note: Adding GeoTags manually does not help, as Google deletes them for privacy reasons. Use AI to write a good description tag instead).

What to Upload: Photos & Videos

What to Upload

Upload at least 10–15 high-quality photos. Include before-and-after photos to provide a visual narrative of your problem-solving abilities. Show your well-organised workspace, well-maintained service vehicles, and branded equipment. Include photos showing your work in your specific service areas to help expand your reach.

The Team

Introduce your team members with headshots and brief descriptions of their expertise. This personal touch builds trust.

Branding Matters

Consider getting name badges for all staff with your logo on them. Staff with branded clothing and vehicles with magnetic door signs positively influence Google rankings.

Videos

Videos trump pictures because they keep people on your page longer, which influences your ranking. Add short videos (30–60 seconds) of your work.

10. Questions & Answers (Answer Engine Optimisation)

Q&As are gold, especially for AI Search. Do not wait for customers to ask questions. Put yourself in the position of a potential customer and ask the questions they normally require information about.

The Strategy

Have a friend (or use another Gmail account) ask keyword-rich questions on your public profile. Then, log in as the owner and answer them in a crisp, conversational manner.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)

Put your "Wordsmith" cap on. Craft answers in sentences that AI Bots can easily copy and paste into AI Search Result Stories. All snippets they use will reference back to your site.

11. Extra Tips for Plumbers

Identity Attributes

Add business identity attributes (e.g., women-owned, black-owned). If people search for these attributes, you will rank for them.

Multiple Practitioners

Where a plumbing business has multiple professionally qualified plumbers who specialise in specific niches (e.g., leak detection), each practising plumber can have their own Google Business Profile, alongside the main Plumbing Business profile. This helps you rank for more categories, but must be managed carefully.

Part 4: Reviews & Reputation Management

Online reviews are pivotal in shaping your reputation.

Proactively Encourage Reviews

Ask every happy customer for a review. The more, the merrier. Recent reviews matter; old reviews do not rank as well.

Make it Easy

Provide clear instructions. Send a direct link via SMS or WhatsApp, or use a QR code printed on your invoices and letterheads.

Keyword Power

Ask them to mention what you did and their location (e.g., "XYZ Plumbing Services exchanged our burst geyser in Honeydew last Sunday.")

Photos in Reviews

Reviews with photos or videos rank higher and can "bury" a bad review.

Respond to All Reviews

Promptly respond to positive and negative reviews. A thankful response showcases professionalism. Addressing negative reviews professionally can mitigate their impact. (Note: Webo offers an AI prompt that will write professional review responses for you).

Part 5: Posts, Offers, and E-E-A-T Strategy

Use Google Posts to share updates, promotions, and news. Regular updates signal to Google that your business is active and relevant.

Informative Updates

Share updates on new services or recent projects using eye-catching visuals.

Weekly Specials

Advertise your deals (e.g., a weekly plumbing special or an incentivised welcome offer). Update them weekly to stay relevant.

The Link Rule

You cannot embed hyperlinks directly into the body text of a Post. Violating this can lead to profile suspension. The only way to add a link is via the CTA (Call To Action) button at the bottom (e.g., "Learn More", "View Offer", "Call Now").

E-E-A-T Links

Use that CTA button to mimic a "read more" link, driving traffic to a detailed Webo Microsite or blog page to boost your Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust (E-E-A-T) ranking criteria.

(Note: Posts can be scheduled for later release!)

Part 6: Monitor, Track & Improve

Check Your Ranking

Did you note your starting position in your location's Google "3-Pack" map results? Go to Google Maps, search for a plumber, and scroll to find your business to see where you rank. Check Google Gemini to see if you feature as the cited answer for questions.

Keyword Relevancy (Insights)

Monitor the keywords your GBP is found for. In your dashboard, select Performance > Search > More to see what terms people are using to find you, and which ones you are missing. (Relax: We will show you how to see all these performance statistics).

UTM Tracking Links

When creating an "Offer" post or adding a website link, you can tag it with a UTM URL. This tracks traffic coming specifically from the GBP so you can measure it in Google Analytics. Webo's AI assistant will help you generate these easily!

Refresh Regularly

Check your information regularly. Google sometimes allows "suggested edits" from the public to slip through.

Bonus: The Completeness Circle

Ensure your listing is 100% complete. Check your GBP Dashboard to make sure the completeness circle icon has turned green. If you have ticked off the checklist above and still do not get a 100% complete green circle - relax - it is just Google trying to get you to advertise, which you do not have to do. Finally, check your GBP on a mobile phone to ensure it looks perfect, because that is likely how your next customer will see it.

CONGRATULATIONS ON COMPLETING PHASE 1

Please WhatsApp your coach with any questions you may have.

NEXT - we will get you and your AI Assistant started with building your GET FOUND & GET GROWING (Ghost) Microsite that gets Google AI to chat to Google Search! WhatsApp your coach when you are ready to start PHASE 2
